On June 6, 2021, the First "Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press—VocabGo Cup" National English Vocabulary Competition for College Students took place. A total of 18,960 students from universities across the country competed together, including those from Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, etc. Ba Meiqi and Zhang Xilai, freshmen from DNUI, won the first prize and the third prize respectively.
The purpose of this competition is to better meet the needs of smart college English teaching and ideological and political education, and to serve the educational goal of cultivating talents with international vision and patriotism in the new era. It also endeavors to assist students in further mastering English expressions with Chinese characteristics in the echo of times on the basis of daily English learning.
On May 19, the College English Teaching Department of the School of Foreign Languages organized the school-level preliminary competition. 4,063 undergraduates from all departments participated by logging onto the "VocabGo Cup" WeChat official account platform. 3,722 students experienced a fierce competition across space. The preliminary competition focused on CET-4 vocabulary and contained seven types of questions: word spelling, meaning selection, word selection, match, collocation, sentence meaning selection, and sentence completion. The top 200 students in the preliminary competition advanced to the provincial competition.
The provincial competition concentrated on CET-6 vocabulary. It also absorbed vocabulary with Chinese characteristics closely related to the development of China in the new era. Undoubtedly, this was challenging for freshmen. A total of 8 contestants from DNUI advanced to the national competition. In the national final, DNUI students won 1 first prize and 1 third prize.
