An "Anti-epidemic" Innovative Design Competition was held by the Student Office and Venture Office (SOVO) of DNUI. With the theme "Innovative Design Contributes to the Prevention and Control of the COVID-19 Epidemic", the competition was designed to guide students to focus on the product and service deficiencies in the epidemic prevention and control, and to apply knowledge acquired in courses such as Mind Innovation and Development and From Non-commercial Plan to Commercial Plan to the innovative design. The novel form of online competition attracted sophomores and juniors in no time.
A total of 8 works reached the final. Innovative as they were, most of them remained in the conception stage. The lack of modeling view or design draft with accurate proportions and visual data made the works far from perfect design solutions. In order to better present the creative results of students, this competition specially set up a final training session. SOVO provided each team with a sophomore majoring in Visual Communication Design. In addition, Liu Yang, the campus-level entrepreneurial tutor, was also invited to instruct the teams to form a truly innovative design.
Lasting for more than a month, the competition finally selected 4 third prizes (picture No.1/3/6/7), 3 second prizes (picture No.2/4/5), and 1 first prize (picture No.8). The "Anti-epidemic" Innovative Design Competition is an exploration of innovation and entrepreneurship teaching reform. By means of competition activities, it adopts a multi-disciplinary and teacher-student co-creation competition format to integrate innovative knowledge and skills, product and service design, and medical and health theories, connecting classroom learning, social practice and ideological and political guidance, and has achieved progressive results. All final works will be selected as the 2020 campus-level innovative and entrepreneurial projects, enjoying privilege in the application for utility model and design patents.
The 1st Prize
The 2nd Prize
The 3rd Prize
Message from the Judges
Message from Wang Lingyu, Deputy Dean of the School of Health Care Technology
All the works are brilliant. Although some details do not fully meet the medical standards, their vision and creativity have far exceeded the teacher's expectations. Provided these works are further refined, they will be able to reach perfection. I hope everyone will continue to carry forward the spirit of innovation and actively participate in future studies and competitions. Keep trying!
Message from Dong Wenliang, Deputy Dean of SOVO
This competition has yielded great fruits. Our students are excellent in showing patriotism and applying knowledge innovatively to contribute to the prevention and control of the epidemic. This is touching. This new model of multi-disciplinary and co-creation of teachers and students has released students' creativity to the utmost extent. This competition is a key pilot for the "Second Classroom" of the innovation and entrepreneurship teaching reform. It is obvious that traditional classroom learning is far from enough to complete the transformation of creative products. Only by transiting from traditional classroom to the second classroom and combining with social practice, can we achieve truly valuable results. Other majors are welcome to explore new models of innovation and entrepreneurship activities with SOVO.
Message from Wang Xinbo, Deputy Director of the Department of Visual Communication Design
This competition is a practice of students’ ability of product prototype design and has enhanced their awareness of innovation. Design is everywhere, and innovation is also the core competence of designers. This competition combines professional knowledge, innovation capabilities, and current political hotspots, and has achieved practical results.
Reflections of Contestants
Li Yilin, Freshman Majoring in Digital Media Technology:
This "Anti-epidemic" Innovative Design Competition gives me the opportunity to display my expertise. My thanks go to all the teachers and students who have assisted our team in the competition. I conceived the design together with my teammates, and at the same time realized my own shortcomings. This is a precious experience and memory for me. I hope we can conceive more ideas and bring more surprises.
Wang Haoyun, Sophomore Majoring in Visual Communication Design:
Innovation is the soul of a nation and an inexhaustible driving force for the prosperity and development of a country. I am honored to be able to participate in this “Anti-epidemic” Innovative Design Competition. I have learned a lot both in the preparation and in the competition. Participating in the competition is a comprehensive practice of individual abilities in all aspects and a process of self-improvement. The harvest is not only theoretical knowledge and technology, but also perfect cooperation among team members. Through this competition, we have gained a better understanding of the whole process of product design and accumulated a wealth of experience.
