On April 22nd,the city of Dalian regained its wake from the morning drizzle and mist. At9:50, when the Dalian Metro Line 2 entered Qingniwa Bridge Station, a voicedwas suddenly heard among the passengers in the third carriage: “From tomorrowon, I will be a happy man; Grooming, chopping, and traveling all over the world......” Immediately afterwards, two persons, four persons, and then a group of themjoined this and they were getting louder and louder. As they read aloud therenowned poem by Haizi: Facing the Seawith Spring Blossoms, more and more passengers were attracted.
It turned out tobe a flash mob public service activity initiated by the Dalian ExecutiveCommittee of ZAKER's “Reading China” and “Reading Dalian” campaigns. The participantsof this event included the teachers and students altogether 23 people fromDepartment of Software Engineering of DNUI, and people who had learned aboutthe activity. The passionate reading of DNUIers inspired the passengers in thecarriage. Passengers who previously concentrated on their mobile phones couldnot help but lifted their heads. There was also a primary school student whoread and recited his favorite extractions, winning a shower of applause from eachwitness.
“There is astrong cultural atmosphere in DNUI. Since 2015, our department has launched the‘Neusoft Commercial Cup Reading Contest’, aiming at the establishment of a readingatmosphere. It calls on students to read more books, develop the habit ofreading, and discover pleasures in it." said Zhou Jiemeihui, secretary ofthe Youth League Committee of Department of Software Engineering. As one of theinstructors, she herself was also a member of the flash mob and thus better promotedthe students’ enthusiasm.
The reporterconducted interviews on site. Many interviewees said that indeed they hadn’tread any books for quite a long time. It was this event that aroused theirinterest in reading once again. At the same time, the event was broadcast liveon the ZAKER platform. In an hour, 82,000 people watched it online and thetotal number of viewers reached 202,000. In the comment section of the livebroadcast platform, many voices had been heard: "I was in the car then,and watching this made me so excited!" "This is fantastic. Perhapsthrough a stranger’s reading, the door to reading will be wide open for me.”"Like this! May reading go into every family and lead the future."
In addition tothe flash mob reading activity in the carriage, this department of DNUI also sentout a squad, who had stayed at the subway entrance early in the morning andpublicized the event to passers-by. In the comment section of the livebroadcast platform, many people also liked DNUIers: “This activity is verymeaningful and we like the students”; “Go out of the school gate to thesociety, be a cultural leader, and take the responsibility as a college student”;“They light up the carriage with books and enrich our lives with reading. DNUIis awesome!"
This was the first time that Dalian was involved in the “Reading China”campaign. The event aimed to stimulate the public’s passion for reading throughactivities. The flash mob activity was greatly assisted by Dalian MetroOperations Co., Ltd. Dalian Radio and Television Station also had follow-up reportson this. After the event, Chu Fan, the host of Channel 105.7, said: “Thestudents from DNUI are all full of vigor. And they are all very enthusiasticand caring. Their active participation in many public service activities can beinterpreted as the representation of youth and the struggle for our future. SoI am very moved and delighted.
