To Flip the Traditional Ideological and Political Education Classes with Its Own MOOC Resources in Dalian Neusoft University of Information
Release time:2017-10-16

In September this year, the Neusoft MOOCs platform of the two courses "Ideological and Moral Cultivation and Legal Basis" and "The Outline of Modern and Contemporary History of China" have been officially launched online, which was researched and developed independently by DNUI . Students can use these MOOC resources anytime, anywhere to complete the elementary learning about the ideological and political theory. While in class, teachers will have more time to carry out thematic teaching and project practice. Such an innovative combination of teaching—“face-to-face teaching + MOOC learning + practice program”—is not only very popular with students, but also very effective in teaching.

"According to the characteristics of teachers and students in our school, guided by the concepts of TOPCARES-CDIO and OBE education teaching reform, we pay more attention to the supervision of learning process and the cultivation of students' practical ability to really improve the effectiveness of teaching," said Shi Chunhua, Director of the political theory education team of Department of Fundamental Courses. On the Neusoft MOOCs Platform, a basic teaching unit is consisted of “short videos + real-time testing + extended reading”. The Q & A about learning and interactive learning can also be achieved online. Teachers can even know students’ learning situation through the “learning data” for teaching supervision online. Since the establishment of MOOC resources of ideological and political courses, students can learn on their computers and mobile phones anytime and anywhere. Besides, students can have the qualification for the final exam after finishing at least 70% online learning. The completion ratio is linked to formative assessment.

Students’ completing the basic theoretical study based on the MOOC resources before class makes class learning more flexible and diverse. “Thematic lectures are adopted for the two courses. For example, the course “The Outline of Modern and Contemporary History of China” is given through lectures on patriotic figures, patriotic events and other topics. In class, students make presentation for practice, which makes them more active and interested in learning,” said Zou Hongjie, a teacher from the Department of Fundamental Courses.

"At least 45 videos for text preparation, recording, and editing have been made for each course. When they were repeatedly pondering the course content, teachers had learned a lot from recording those videos. In comparison with traditional way of education, MOOC is a great innovation and breakthrough. In terms of such an open platform, teachers feel more pressure to face innovation bravely, to update educational philosophy, to improve teaching skills, and to change teaching methods,” said Guan Wei, a teacher who is responsible for recording videos from Experimental Training Center.

The new mode of the course is popular with students. "In class, the teacher will teach us classic cases and important points of knowledge. After class, we can do self-study online so as not only to enrich the after-class life but also to extend and expand the lessons taught in class. The two-in-one mode of learning not only increased the fun of learning, but also effectively consolidated the knowledge we learn," said Li Shuyu, a student from the Department of Information Administration.

The new teaching reform has also achieved some success. In March of 2017, the students' practical project in class won the first prize and the third prize of Liaoning Province Ideological and Political Micro Video Contest; in September of 2017, the students’ works won one first prize and two third prizes in Liaoning Province Ideological and Political Class Practical Teaching Video Contest. This innovative exploration of education and teaching reform has a powerful impetus to the ideological and political education and the construction of civilized campus in DNUI.
