"Whatkind of president of a university do you prefer?”—different students may havedifferent ideas kept in mind. In my opinion, however, a university presidentcan win love and esteem not only through his or her charisma, but also throughthe students’ love for the school. That is to say, if the students love theirschool, they will love everything on campus. Therefore, great efforts should bemade to help students to stimulate dreams and create values, and then studentswill naturally love the place for their growth and success.

Inmy opinion at all times, the value of students is the value of the schoolitself. The value of education between educators and education recipients is tobe embodied by educators and added by education recipients, which forms a valuechain including the school, students, and the society. How to maximize thevalue of this chain? The key is that how to give students “the greatest care”—thecare is given to students’ individualized growth and success, and theircultivation in the area of knowledge, ability and quality.

In2000, I resigned from the post of Vice President of a state-owned university. Togetherwith Liu Jiren, Chairman of Neusoft Group, I came to Dalian and founded a newuniversity.

Asa new type of university, co-established by some software companies and DalianSoftware Park, Dalian Neusoft University of Information has the innate sense ofcrisis and the gene of industrialization. It is why the spirit of innovationand entrepreneurship was regarded as the vitality of our school. We strive toexplore a new model of development of China’s private universities with characteristics. On such a sparsely populated road, I never felt lonely. It has been 15 yearssince the foundation of our school that we keep adhering to the original dream, and continue to make amendments, have attempts and surpass it.

Weconstructed the training system for the needs of society and industrialapplications, and implemented the TOPCARES-CDIO educational reform; we are opento collaboration, and embrace changes, which has closely integrated with theregional economic and industrial development; we took internationalization asan important strategic choice for students to broaden a wider horizon and moreroom for development; we set up a flexible learning system based on 4A(Anytime, Anywhere, Anyway, Any Content) to provide higher quality educationand services for learners; we have been exploring the innovativeentrepreneurship education since the establishment of our school, such asestablishing the SOVO center for college students, which integrates innovative  entrepreneurship education into the entireprocess of talent training; we attach much more importance to the spiritual andcultural shaping on campus, where students can achieve spiritual abundance andprosperity.

Weare pleased to see that each year students have achieved their dreams indifferent ways after graduating: they got the admission to a multinationalcorporation by finishing 15 million lines of code; they became contracted photographersof an international website by tens of thousands of times shutter recording;they found their own companies after 4 years’ experience in innovative andentrepreneurial field practice…

Ioften told the students and teachers in our school: on the road to realize adream, we should keep “5 hearts” in mind: “a quiet heart” for diligentlearning; “a gratitude heart” for the benefit of others; “a reflective heart”for special ideas; “a daring heart” for brave implementation; and finally “anoriginal heart” for a dream. This is my expectation for the students as well asmy encouragement for my colleagues and me.

As a university of entrepreneurship, both our school and Iare and have always been on the road to entrepreneurship. (abridged edition accordingto the speech)
