Deepen Teaching Reform and Emphasize Teaching Quality

On 21st August, Dalian Institute held in lecture room A1-306 a report meeting themed ”Strengthen teaching management and implement teaching quality assurance system” in order to put all the key work in 2007 into effect thoroughly, further consummate the teaching quality inspection and the assessment mechanism, and unify the thoughts during the work in the new semester. Dr. Wen Tao, Secretary of Party Committee and President of Dalian NII and other school leaders attended the meeting which was presided over by President’s Office Director Yin Chenglin.
At the meeting, our Vice President Professor Cao Yunfeng assigned the teaching tasks of the new term to the faculty and raised the guiding ideology and ideas on the new-term work. Professor Cao pointed out that the teaching quality and teaching reform will get started in this term. We will take practical measures in the aspects of teaching reform, teaching construction and teaching management to make greater progress in teaching quality and try our utmost to set up a teaching system adapting to our first-class practice-oriented IT institute within five years. Professor Cao also put forward the major tasks for this term: First, the reform on talent cultivating mode needs breakthroughs. We should turn passive customized training into active customized training; implement “3+1”practice-oriented talents cultivating mode at the whole institute step by step, focus on the training aiming at improving the teachers’ field training ability, perfect the content design for field training, strengthen the training on students’ practical ability. Second, we need to make substantial progress with the construction of our core courses. It is necessary to take further demonstration on the plan of core courses construction, to select core courses according to actual situation, to lay down the plan and standard for core course construction, to define the responsibilities of each principal, to make the plan of core courses construction and to put it into action. Third, progress should be made at different stages in College English teaching reform. We carry out Graded College English Teaching Program based on students’ individual English level, dynamic Level-to-Level Administration, corresponding English teaching reform and grading plan to improve students’ English level and practical ability, so as to bring them more advantage in employment. Professor Cao added that the institute should arrange some teaching conferences at proper time, to standardize teaching management system, exchange teaching reform experience and award excellent individuals and units.
Afterwards, President Assistant Liu Chunyu assigned the experimental teaching tasks for the new term. During his talk, Mr. Liu first introduced the scale, mode and method of the experimental teaching, and then he pointed out the deficiencies that have appeared in the present experimental teaching. Mr. Liu laid emphasis on the major tasks in experimental teaching for this term: We should strengthen the construction of field training system and improve our laboratory’s service efficiency according to the requirements and skills needed by a profession based on our core courses; standardize each experimental teaching period and improve students’ practical skills through careful plan, teaching preparations and laboratory’s arrangements; reform grading methods and improve experimental teaching quality under the guidance of examinations.
After that, Professor Zhang Wei, Vice President of the institute, gave a detailed report on the construction of teaching quality system. First of all, he emphasized the objectives of the construction of teaching quality system and introduced the teaching quality assurance procedure and the information feedback system through a large number of tables and charts. After the introduction to the framework of our institute’s teaching quality, professor Zhang briefly stated the strategies of the teaching quality assurance system and proposed the strategy of “cross-implementation of ABET standard and process control”. Afterwards, he also made a summary on the work of our institute’s teaching quality for last term. Last term the institute issued Teaching Guide for Teachers (Trial) and Teachers’ Teaching Quality Evaluation Plan and carried out the teaching quality inspection and evaluation to all the teachers based on our information system. As a result, we achieved certain positive effects. In this term, the institute will issue Course Teaching Quality Standard, and focus its evaluation work on field training and experimental courses. At last, professor Zhang illustrated the importance of implementing performance evaluation by taking forced ranking systems by Jack Welch as an example.
Secretary of the Party Committee and President of NII , Doctor Wen Tao delivered a concluding speech at the meeting. In his speech, Wen Tao pointed out that the institute has developed from a start-up stage into a stage of internal construction. The meeting was held in the hope that the faculty can do their jobs in more details and constantly improve talent training quality and employment quality through deepening teaching reform and improving quality system, so as to achieve the goal that more than 30 percent of the graduates can enter well-known IT enterprises.
President Wen stressed the importance of “3 +1” talent training mode reform, major core course construction, and graded college English teaching. He also pointed out the importance of strengthening teachers’ practical training ability, and spoke highly of the field training of Department of Computer Science and the work done by Department of Information Technology and Business Administration, International Cooperation and Exchanges Centre and the Continuing Education Centre in summer holidays.
President Wen Tao clarified the requirements of key jobs in this semester:
First, we should build not only suitable teaching systems for first-class IT application-oriented institute, but also suitable curriculums, teaching staff, staff of students’ affairs and management teams.
Second, in order to build a team of high-level application-oriented teachers, we must unswervingly implement forced ranking system and develop teachers’ assessment works according to “Teacher’s Appointment and Management Regulation”. The institute will continue to strengthen the training of teachers in the hope that all teachers can constantly enhance their professional competitiveness through their own efforts.
Third, in five years, our efforts should be put on construction of major core courses so as to accumulate a number of outstanding educational resources. Departments of academic affairs and quality assurance should jointly develop core course building standards, and plan in accordance with these standards. We must implement high standards and strict requirements, and evaluate students scientifically and strictly.
Fourth, we should put experimental and practical teaching into practice, and separate experiment from quizzes when we make out teaching calendar and teaching plans, so as to regulate experimental teaching process.
Fifth, we should attach great importance to the roles played by staff of students’ affairs in the construction of campus culture and brand dissemination. Staff of students’ affairs should work among students. Building a strong student management team is also important to quality construction. We should refer to teaching quality evaluation system, and establish quality standards and evaluation systems suitable for students’ affairs and management service system.
Sixth, we should attach great importance to the "first class" and all teachers are expected to do well in the opening classes of the semester in accordance with the principle of “ Whoever gives class will be responsible for it”, so as to arouse students’ interest in learning and to promote teaching reform process. Finally, President Wen Tao hoped that all the staff can have a comprehensive understanding of key jobs in this semester, and encouraged everyone’s efforts to achieve a better vision of establishing a first-class IT application-oriented institute.
