A Seminar on Practice Teaching System Successfully Convened

On the afternoon of May 23rd, a seminar on practice teaching system organized by R&D center was held in Conference Room 217 of the Administration Building. Dr. Zhang Wei, Vice President of NII, Professor Cao Yunfeng, Vice President of NII, Mr. Liu Chunyu, President Assistant, Professor Qi Zhiru, President Consultant and Dean of Department of Computer Science and Technology, and deputy deans who are responsible for practice teaching from various departments were present at the seminar.
At the meeting, Mr. Liu Chunyu gave a report on our school’s existing system of practice teaching, conveyed Chairman and CEO of Neusoft Group—Liu Jiren and NII’s President—Dr. Wen Tao’s instructions on the construction of systematic practice teaching system, introduced the situation of the construction of our school’s open environment of practice teaching and its major aspects, the practice teaching system, the implementation process of the experimental teaching and its documentation system, emphasized the time, place, and the way of accomplishment. He also took two majors "Computer Science and Technology" and "Computer Application Technology" of Department of Computer Science and Technology as examples to analyze the proportion of teaching hours for the classes of theoretical teaching, classroom experiments and laboratory experiments.
Next, the participant teachers from different departments gave their speeches one after another, pointing out the problems in teaching and their plans of solution to these problems. The teachers of different departments came to a consensus that the effect of the laboratory experiment courses was quite obvious, and the job done by the instructing teachers in the laboratory of experimental classes was also excellent, no matter before, in the middle of or after a class. In the laboratory, each student could do experiments by themselves, creating a favorable learning atmosphere and which greatly accelerating students’ initiative in learning.
The problems in practice teaching lie in classroom experiments. As classroom experiments accounted for the majority of the teaching hours, the teaching quality of the classroom experiments played an important part in the quality of the whole process of practice teaching. Currently, the scale of classroom experimental teaching classes is 90 students; therefore, not all the students will be guaranteed to receive guidance if the experimental guidance is not comprehensive and timely enough; in addition, according to the requirements of the experimental teaching, students’ experimental reports should be all reviewed. However, some teachers have to review 2,000 to 3,000 copies, which is a very hard job for them to finish. Therefore, there is a severe shortage of teaching staff. For these problems, the participants also discussed a number of corresponding solutions: for example, to check part of the classroom experimental reports to appropriately reduce some workload. However, the disadvantage of such a practice is that we cannot give an accurate grade to every student. To solve the problem of inadequate instructing teachers, a suggestion on increasing the number of such teachers has been proposed except for the flexible class hours of classroom experimental classes.
Based on these issues, Vice President Cao Yunfeng pointed out that the guiding ideology of practice teaching system should be specified, and be classified into three levels scientifically and reasonably, namely the practice teaching system, the practice teaching knowledge system and the practice teaching assurance system; the ultimate goal is to cultivate students with capabilities of basic technique application, integrated design operation, and integrated professional and innovative research abilities.
Finally, Vice President Zhang Wei called on all the deans from different departments to organize discussions on the issue of classroom experiment among teachers after the meeting. Then, the discussion results should be collected for another meeting to figure out feasible solutions for different majors. At the same time, more teachers should be involve in ensuring the smooth implementation of practice teaching. According to Mr. Liu Jiren, practice teaching, especially the teaching of English, should make students speak, learn and practice English every day, so as to enable students to develop good study habits of English, and thus effectively improve their English level in application.
