Developing Teaching and Learning Style; Constructing Excellent School Ethos

In May, when everything on earth is flourishing, the Neusoft II campus is full of vitality with encouraging slogans everywhere. In his speech at the beginning of this semester, President Wen Tao of NII emphasized the construction of teaching and leaning style. The college therefore set out to disseminate among teachers and students a learning style of “diligence, preciseness, practical-mindedness and innovation” and a teaching style of “sedulity, dedication, enterprise and innovation”. All departments have started to take measures to put the essence of President Wen Tao’s speech into practice. Create a favorable atmosphere and enhance learning efficiency With regard to the situation that Neusoft students are good at practice but weak at perseverance and theoretical knowledge, Chen often introduces some good books to the students and encourages her students to read quality-fostering books at the library, so as to cultivate their morality and develop a good study habit. Also, Chen usually shares some interesting and useful extracurricular knowledge with her students in class to broaden their mind and arouse their interest in their studies. Attach importance to the cultivation of self-study ability “Developing teaching and learning style and constructing excellent school ethos” not only helps to improve teaching quality, but also leads students to develop their self-study ability and willing-to-learn attitude, which will make them take the initiative to learn”, said Zhang Haiyun, teacher from English Department, “NII has a favorable learning environment, advanced teaching facilities and well-established rules and regulations. But there is much space for improvement in the development of leaning habits and creation of learning atmosphere. Meanwhile, a teacher should play the role of promoting and inducting by recommending scientific learning methods. We should instruct them academically and pay attention to their personal life. Only by keeping timely track of their thoughts can we realize targeted and personalized cultivation. A teacher is more of a cultivator than a lecturer. We should emphasize both intellectual training and personal development, so as to realize our aim of cultivating students into high-quality IT talents.” Build role models and make demonstration Song Ce, Student Union Chairman of Japanese Department, said, “The improvement of teaching and learning style and school ethos is beneficial to the formation of unique and favorable school ethos and the creation of a learning atmosphere of competing, learning, pursuing, helping and surpassing”. On how to mobilize students to create a favorable learning atmosphere, Song said, “as a student leader, I believe the most important thing is to set a good example and create a favorable learning atmosphere within a smaller circle like the dormitory. The atmosphere will gradually expand and influence the next-door room, the class and even the whole campus. Student leaders may organize some meaningful activities like morning reading, vocabulary contest in preparation for the upcoming foreign language tests, which will strengthen students’ command of knowledge, create a favorable learning atmosphere and finally urge everybody to foster good learning spirit and promote learning style construction. Students’ voices— Student Jin from the Department of Computer Science and Technology said that with regard to the current status of our school, we need a good atmosphere to help improve ourselves. Many regulations of the school are fairly good; for example, evening self-study, to a large extent, has increased the students’ enthusiasm for learning, and many students take the initiative to learn. Construction of good style of teaching and study is related to the long-term development of the institute and the individuals. We should take actions and bid farewell to laziness, dispiritedness, and have a happy and meaningful college life. Wang from English Department has been adhering to doing morning jogging exercises, and he said, “I used to do things halfway, so I decided to do some jogging every morning. In the beginning it just tempered my will, but now it has become a habit. Every morning after running, I feel particularly good in mood, and I’m also used to memorizing some English afterwards. I found that my memory is better after exercise.” Yang from Japanese Department said, “At the beginning of this semester, I was still in the state of being lazy from the holidays,” but the morning exercise ended her laziness. Although she wasn’t quite used to it in the beginning, now it has become a habit to go to bed and wake up early, and her life is more regular. Not only is she full of spirit, but the efficiency of study has also been improved. She believes that morning exercise does not only mean to get up early, and more importantly, it is conducive to enhancing physique, rejuvenate vigor, and prepare herself for the study of the whole day. The style of study, teaching, and school ethos are subtle influence and very powerful force; they silently regulate the behavior of all the teachers and students, with cultivation and guiding function. If teacher is said to be the engineer of human souls, then the school is a place to cultivate characters. The construction of the style of study, teaching, and school ethos has been gradually recognized in the continuous exploration and practice process of teachers and students of generations. It is a long-term accumulation of a positive, healthy and civilized campus culture that requires everyone to build it and create it.
