From CDIO to Professional Development and Curriculum Construction

After successfully switching to an independently-set general institution of higher education, the institute began to develop at a new historical starting point. Facing the new challenges and tasks, how to give full play to our advantages in  industry-university cooperative education, how to deepen the reform of education and teaching, to improve teaching quality, to achieve the goal of distinctive, high-level IT application-oriented institute has become an important and urgent task in front of us. In response to this, a faculty meeting was held on July 13 morning in A1-306. At the meeting,   Professor Wen Tao, President of our institute made an education and teaching reform mobilizing speech "From CDIO to professional development and curriculum building" , the meeting was chaired by Mr. Che Ruwen, party secretary of Neusoft Institute of Information. Before the mobilizing meeting, Party Secretary Che pointed out it had been more than nine years since the foundation of our institute, during which, our institute had been developed rapidly. He said we couldn’t have achieved this without the joint efforts of all staff, without our entrepreneurial passion and drive, without our firm insistence in the reform and innovation of teaching and education. The future, need to be prepared to all faculty and staff, constantly opening and innovation, adhering to scientific development, and strive to college as early as possible into a unique, high-level IT application-oriented university. During the mobilization meeting, President Wen Tao pointed out that , from a global point of view, , personnel training of the international engineering education is growing, but from the quantity and quality point of view, there is a big industry demand gap for IT professionals. "Booms  and  dilemma" in the employment situation shows that there are still a big gap between the industrial demand and the cultivation of talents in the current international engineering education. The reality of our institute requires a combination of the new ways in the current international engineering education, making developing a "practical, internationalization, personalized" talent as the goal, contining to adhere to industry-academia cooperation, conducting a comprehensive reform of education and teaching under the guidance of CDIO philosophy. During the report, President Wen also introduced the concept and framework of CDIO, illustrated the elements of CDIO and the two central issues that CDIO responded.  Subsequently,President Wen Tao explained in detail the CDIO"s One Vision, Onw Outline,Twelve  Standards and Five guidelines, and demonstrated the feasibility and necessity of the implementation of CDIO.After reexaming the present teaching mode in our institute combined with CDIO teaching philosophy, President Wen Tao analyzed all aspects in our  profession setting, knowledge structure, curriculum system, theoretical teaching, practice teaching, and pointed out the problems. When it comes to the solutions to problmes, President Wen stressed that the college in the coming period of time, educational reform should be closely around the CDIO educational concepts, using CDIO to transform our teaching. President Wen also made next step arrangements in implementation of the reform of education and teaching, asked everyone to conscientiously study the CDIO philosophy, the elaboration of the reform plan, full implementation of the new teaching plan. President Wen built out of Neusoft-CDIO educational reform model, put forward a Neusoft-CDIO educational reform idea, requested that, in the future process of training qualified personnel, the integrated professional building should be conducted, build an integrated curriculum should be built, the teaching environment and the teacher’s practical ability should be further improved, the pilot program should be gradually implemented. President Wen also described in detail the teaching reform of the implementation of the pilot programs and projects in teaching conditions."basic computer skills" pilot program, for example, described in detail the teaching reform plan of the implementation of the pilot programs and requirements in project teaching. The meeting concluded, Wenyuan Zhang hoped that all staff could reflect on the transformation of our teaching with the CDIO-depth, including teaching-related courses design, featured CDIO project planning and setting, building of assessment mechanism and improvement of teacher’s practical ability. President Wen also explained the future teaching guidance. He said the key is to emancipate our mind and involve all staff in the learning and understanding of CDIO and to build a background and environment suitable to the learning of students. He said “Based on industry characteristics, we should, according to CDIO engineering education concept, improve the Professional Building Norms and Curriculum Standards, build an integrated curriculum system centered on capacity-building. We should create a student Capability Maturity Model CDIO-CMM, assess the student learning outcomes, renew teaching ideas, innovate practice-based teaching methods, build a complete evaluation system and quality assurance mechanisms (including the Professional Assessment Standards" and "Curriculum Evaluating Standards") based on CDIO-CMM, PDCA, enhance teacher’s ability of the engineering practice, improve the teaching and learning environment, emphasize the innovative capacity-building. The mobilization meeting indicated the next stage direction of the institute’s education and teaching reform and the formulation of development plans.  After the meeting, all departments discussed President Wen’s report in detail..
