On Aug. 11-18, 2007, led by Ren Hao, the Vice Secretary of NII Party Committee, and Wu Jianning, Director of Branding and Strategic Development Department, twenty teachers and students of the 2007 NII Intel Summer Camp went to Shanghai for a one-week practice in some of the famous IT companies after the previous 2006 Open Source Journey – Neusoft Student Summer IT Practice to Beijing. The activity was initiated and organized by Branding and Strategic Development Department of NII with an entire support from Intel Corporation. The students were expected to visit the working scene, to learn the development and technological tendency of IT industry and to experience the culture and management of those famous IT corporations. The first stop of this summer camp was Zizhu Park Zone of Intel, the world biggest chip manufacturer. Doctor Wang Wenhan, Vice President of Intel SSG (Software and Solutions Group) and General Manager for Chinese products development, talked with the students and teachers friendly. On behalf of NII’s teachers and students, Vice Secretary of NII Party Committee Ren Hao thanked Intel Corporation for its support to NII in constructing the laboratory, updating the curriculum and training the teachers. Mr. Ren expressed the willingness of more than ten thousand Neusoft students to be the beneficiary as well as propeller of Intel’s latest technology and production based on the fine digital network of NII. He also looked ahead into the bright future of long term, win-win cooperation between NII and Intel. Dr. Wang Wenhan approved the propelling effect of NII as one of its partners in Multi-core University Program. He spoke as well of a more practical and thorough cooperation with NII so that more students could enjoy its world’s leading multi-core technology. Ma Xuan, team leader of this summer camp, presented on behalf of all members a gift to Intel Corporation – a carefully designed, hand-made memory book which had recorded the wonderful moments of 2006 Open Source Journey – Neusoft Student Summer IT Practice and their reflections. He expressed that all members would make full use of this valuable chance and share their gains back at school. The students later visited Intel’s Product R&D laboratory to admire its technology and application of the latest processor – Conroe Dual Core Processor and to learn its intelligent and efficient design philosophy and its innovative and power saving technology. Lecture series were given by experts in Intel to introduce the application and future development of Multi-core technology and its production. Conversations related to these questions were made. Intel Corporation also made an introduction to its culture and development course and showed the students around its modern offices, its lounge which showed a human touch and its gymnasium. Intel also replied to the questions such as its standard in recruiting personnel. The students were strongly encouraged to seek a right career early, pay attention to the industry development and be bold in blazing new trails. Supported by Intel Corporation, the summer camp arranged a lot of practical activities meeting the demands of college students. Except for visiting Intel Corporation, the students also visited some well-known IT companies at home and abroad, such as Tsinghua Tongfang Computer Production Base in Wuxi, HP’s Personal Information Products Group, Shengda Network, Novell Inc., Neusoft Group, and etc. They communicated with technological experts face to face and learned one to one. Taking “Being an employee of a famous company for one day”, “Being a software engineer for one day” and “Being an IT reporter for one day” separately as the themes, the students had a comprehensive understanding and study of the work environments, corporate cultures and technology applications in IT enterprises. During a week of learning and exchange, the teachers and students of Neusoft II experienced the technologies, administrations and cultures of IT enterprises in person and satisfactorily accomplished the summer camp with a positive spirit. As one of the unique summer practical activities, this summer camp built a bridge of benign interaction between schools and enterprises, helped students set clearer learning and career objectives as well as promoted to cultivate the students’ practical abilities and spirits of innovation. During the practical process, the students showed a great interest in those famous IT enterprises’ personnel standards. They discussed the connections between university study and job requirements with those IT engineers. At the mean time, they deeply felt corporate cultures and humane management of those well-known IT companies and took notes very carefully. Ma Xuan, a student from Department of Computer Science and Technology, said, “Although I pay special attention to these excellent IT companies in my spare time, my understanding about those companies only stays on the surface. This summer camp provides me a real experience of being an IT employee of a famous IT company and let me feel different corporate cultures, which has an important and instructive significance on choosing my future learning and career objective. While experiencing the collaborative work atmosphere in these IT enterprises profoundly, I make a firmer decision on joining IT industry after my graduation.” In order to strengthen the exchanges between the teachers and the enterprise technological experts, seven teachers were also sent to participate in the summer camp by Neusoft II. Through communicating with the technological experts and human resources experts concerned, these teachers fully understood the requirements of today’s IT industry on the quality of talents. As the main propellent of this activity, Mr. Wu Jianning (Director of Branding and Strategic Development Department of Neusoft II) said, “The most distinctive characteristic of Neusoft II is university-industry interaction, so our institute tries its best to create as many practical opportunities as possible for our students. Although the number of student of this summer camp is not too large and its duration is not too long, we could see the students’ enthusiasm about corporate practice and the hot discussions between our teachers and enterprise engineers from it. All these interactions will play a positive role in our understanding industry development, learning leading-edged science and technology and improve our teaching.” Featuring the application-oriented and practice-focused school-running mode, Neusoft II have been considering the industry-university cooperation as the key to success since the establishment since 6 years ago, enhancing it and keeping a closer cooperation relationship and all kinds of cooperation with many enterprises such as Intel, HP, IBM, etc. Last September, Intel invested $40,000,000 into Neusoft Group, which will lead to the deeply cooperation in the fields such as solutions, communities and household medical care, embedded system and IT training. Meanwhile the cooperation includes the co-development of interactive education and practical certificate training projects at Neusoft Group’s NII and the establishment of R&D center with some companies which will accelerate the adoption and popularization of INTEL platform technology. Neusoft II has been in the various communications and cooperation in the last few years. Intel provided the latest and most advanced technological products and solutions for Neusoft II and the newest software and hardware products and technology support for teaching and learning, which drove the construction of Neusoft digital campus greatly. At the same time, the construction and application of digital campus became one of the biggest users and pushers of Intel product and technology. It creates a win-win situation for the joint development of the institute and company.
